What is Undercover Word?

Undercover Word is a fast-paced social deduction game designed for 4-10 players. It combines the deduction elements of Mafia and Werewolf with a word-guessing twist. The game is simple to learn but requires strategy, observation, and a bit of luck to win.

The Core Concept: Everyone receives a secret word on their phone. Most players get the same word, but one player (the "Undercover") gets a slightly different word. Through discussion and clues, the group tries to identify who has the different word. If the Undercover survives the voting round, they win. If they're eliminated by the group, everyone else wins.

It's like a detective game where everyone is both trying to solve a mystery AND trying to hide. The tension comes from not knowing who's dangerous, and the fun comes from the clever clues people give.

What You Need to Play

Players

4-10 players recommended. Games with 4-5 players are quick and intense. 7-8 players is the sweet spot for most groups.

Devices

Each player needs access to a phone, tablet, or computer with a web browser. No app downloads needed. Works on WiFi or cellular data.

Location

Play anywhere: living room, office, party venue, or even outdoors. You need space for everyone to sit and see each other during discussion.

Time

Each game takes 10-15 minutes. You'll likely want to play multiple rounds, so plan for 1-2 hours for a full game night.

Speaker

Optional but helpful: a speaker for the host to announce game phases. Not required.

Game Setup (5 Minutes)

  1. 1.Choose a host. This is typically the most experienced player or the person organizing the game night. The host doesn't play but manages the game flow.
  2. 2.Host creates a room. The host clicks "Create Game" on undercoverword.com and enters their name. They'll receive a room code (e.g., "ABCD").
  3. 3.Players join the room. Each player visits undercoverword.com, enters the room code, and types their name. They'll see a lobby with all other players joining.
  4. 4.Everyone checks in. Wait until all players have joined and are ready. The host reviews game settings if desired (difficulty, game mode, etc.).
  5. 5.Host starts the game. Once everyone is ready, the host clicks "Start Game" and the first round begins.

💡 Pro Tip: Have players join a few minutes early. It gives everyone time to test their connection and get comfortable with the interface before the game starts.

How to Play Step-by-Step

Phase 1: Secret Word Distribution (10 seconds)

Each player looks at their phone and sees their secret word. Do NOT show anyone else your word. Everyone has 10 seconds to memorize or take a mental note of their word. The game is designed so most players will have the same word, but at least one player will have a slightly different version.

Example: Most players see "Apple," but one player sees "Orange."

Phase 2: Discussion & Clues (3-5 minutes)

Now everyone discusses out loud, at the same time. Each player takes turns giving one-word clues about their secret word. The clue should help teammates figure out the word, but not be so obvious that the Undercover immediately knows it.

Your goal: If you're a regular player, give clues that make sense for your word while trying to spot anyone who seems confused or gives a clue that doesn't fit. If you're the Undercover, give clues that could fit either word, making it hard to tell if you're faking it.

Example: If the word is "Apple", clues might be: "Red", "Fruit", "Sweet", "Orchard"
If you're Undercover with "Orange", you might say: "Citrus", "Round", "Juice"

Phase 3: Voting (1-2 minutes)

After discussing, each player votes for who they think is the Undercover. You can vote for anyone (including yourself as a joke, though it won't help your team). Based on the clues, you're trying to identify who seemed confused or who gave a clue that didn't fit the group's word.

Voting happens privately on each player's phone. No one sees your vote until all votes are in.

Phase 4: Results

The player with the most votes is eliminated. If it's the Undercover, the group wins! If it's a regular player, the Undercover wins and earns points.

Understanding the Roles

👥 Regular Player

You have the same word as most other players. Your job is to:

  • ✓ Give clues that fit your word
  • ✓ Listen to others' clues for consistency
  • ✓ Spot anyone giving weird clues
  • ✓ Vote out the Undercover

🕵️ Undercover

You have a different word. Your job is to:

  • ✓ Give clues that could fit both words
  • ✓ Listen to others' clues to guess their word
  • ✓ Act like you know the same word
  • ✓ Survive voting and avoid being caught

Example Game Walkthrough

Setup: 5 players join a game.

Secret Words:

  • • Player A: "PIZZA"
  • • Player B: "PIZZA"
  • • Player C: "PIZZA" (Undercover with "PRETZEL")
  • • Player D: "PIZZA"
  • • Player E: "PIZZA"

Clues Given (in order):

  • • Player A: "Cheese" ✓
  • • Player B: "Italian" ✓
  • • Player C: "Salty" 🤔 (Could fit pizza, might fit pretzel)
  • • Player D: "Toppings" ✓
  • • Player E: "Delivered" ✓

Discussion: Players A, B, D, E are confident about the word. But Player E thinks Player C's clue was weird. "Salty" works for pizza toppings, but the clue was vague. Player A thinks it's player C.

Votes: Everyone votes for Player C except Player C (who votes for Player B). Player C has 4 votes and is eliminated.

Reveal: Player C was the Undercover with "PRETZEL"! Players A, B, D, E win!

Tips for Your First Game

📝 Listen Carefully

Write down everyone's clues if you can. Look for patterns. Does someone give clues that don't fit?

🎯 Give Specific Clues

If you're a regular player, be specific. "Red" is vague. "Cherry red" or "Traffic light shade" is better.

🤐 Don't Give Away Your Word

Your clues should help your team figure out the word, but the Undercover shouldn't be able to guess it immediately.

👀 Watch Body Language

Pay attention to who looks confused, hesitant, or who talks too much to cover something up.

🎭 Act Confident

If you're new, don't overthink it. Give your clues with confidence and engage in the conversation naturally.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Showing Your Phone

Never let anyone see your word before voting. This ruins the game.

❌ Silence During Discussion

If you don't give a clue or stay very quiet, people will think you're the Undercover. Participate even if you're nervous.

❌ Giving Clues That Are Too Vague

Clues like "Thing" or "Stuff" don't help your team. Be helpful but not too obvious.

❌ Taking It Too Seriously

This is a party game! Have fun. People will be more relaxed if you're relaxed.

❌ Voting Based on Friendship

Vote based on clues and strategy, not who you like. That's what makes the game competitive and fun.

Beginner Strategy Tips

Once you've played a few rounds, here are strategic tips to improve your game:

For Regular Players:

  • • Give clues related to specific attributes (tasty, red, healthy)
  • • Listen for clues that could fit MULTIPLE things
  • • Watch who seems confused by the group's clues
  • • The Undercover often talks more to gather information
  • • Vote early and confidently to prevent second-guessing

For the Undercover:

  • • Listen to the FIRST 2-3 clues to guess the real word
  • • Give clues that could fit both your word and theirs
  • • Don't talk too much (it's suspicious)
  • • Don't talk too little (silent people get voted out)
  • • Vote with the group to seem normal
